The Northeast Regional Championships

About The Tournament

The Northeast Regional Championships is the grand Season Finale tournament for the entire Northeastern United States. Anyone who plays will find themselves competing against the very best teams on some of the finest, and most challenging, questions NAQT has to offer. This “Nationals for the Northeast,” if you will, is a two-day Quizbowl extravaganza unlike any other.

Teams from all throughout New England, the New York Tri-State Area, Pennsylvania, and Delaware are eligible to play the tournament. Only the very best will rise to the top.

Are you ready for the challenge?

Location, Dates, and Lodging

The Northeast Regional Championships will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19, 2024. Expect the tournament to last all day each day, and plan to stay the entire time; even if you are eliminated from contention early, we strongly encourage you to stay and watch the Sunday rounds or enjoy all Fairfield County has to offer.

The Northeast Regional Championships will be hosted at Darien High School, Darien, Connecticut.

Lodging is available at many hotels in Stamford.

Questions and Format

The Northeast Regional Championships will use NAQT’s Small School National Championship Tournament, or SSNCT, set. The set, though harder than regular difficulty, is still accessible to all teams. Please note that, in order to play, you or your school cannot attend any other tournament using the SSNCT set, including the NAQT SSNCT tournament itself.

On Saturday, we will be using the standard format of twenty tossups and twenty bonuses per game, with no game clock and NAQT rules otherwise. On Sunday, we will be using the NAQT National Championships format with all its rules in place, including a game clock. Games will be timed for two ten minute halves, with up to twenty-four tossup-bonus cycles.

There will be no computational mathematics tossups; there will, however, be computational mathematics bonuses.

The precise format will be determined once the field is finalized; however, you can expect at least ten rounds on Saturday, as there will be large round-robin preliminary brackets, followed by a large double-elimination bracket on Sunday, where you may play anywhere from two to eleven games, depending on how many you win.

Qualification

Registration is now open for any team in the Northeast that wishes to attend.

Teams, Players, and Adults

Each team can be composed of anywhere from one to six players, with an unlimited number of spectators (subject to capacity limitations). Up to four players can compete at once.

Each team must submit a team photo for the program. This can be done at any time after registration.

Each player must meet NAQT’s eligibility guidelines.

The field for this tournament is hard-capped at sixty teams. All further teams will be placed onto a waitlist.

We are happy to allow teams not directly sponsored by their district to register, without restriction. Such teams can choose to play under a pseudonym, which we will assign to you.

If you are staying in your home overnight, neither a coach nor any adult is required to be present. If you are staying overnight in any hotel or house that is not your own, you absolutely must have a coach or adult with you, with a minimum of one per school for high schools and three per school for middle schools. The coach or adult does not need to view every game or be with you at all times, but they must remain in the immediate area during the day and be with you in your hotel at night. This rule is in place should something go wrong at the event that requires adult assistance. Having someone over the age of eighteen on your team does not count as having an adult with you; they must not be a player and, preferably, over the age of 21.

Note that the minimum age to check into a hotel is generally 21.

Readers, Buzzers, and Outside Staffers

Each team is required to bring a competent reader to the tournament. Such a reader should be available for the entire length of the tournament and able to read and scorekeep a game of Quizbowl. A reader may be anyone who is capable of doing so. Do not bring readers who do not know what they are doing or you will be charged the no-reader fee or have your discount revoked at our sole discretion.

Each reader should bring a laptop and be in business casual dress. Readers will be provided two days of breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

If you cannot bring a reader, you will be charged $100 per team.

Should you qualify and sign up 3 or 4 teams for the tournament, a second reader will be required.

Should you bring an additional reader, you will receive a $75 per reader discount.

Buzzer discounts are not available for this event. The set of questions used for the event will be available after the tournament on NAQT.com at no charge; paper copies will not be sold.

If you are an outside staffer and want to help out at this tournament, we’d love to have you! Please do not hesitate to contact us. Outside staffers will be paid $100, plus a travel stipend, two days of breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and water. If you are from outside the area, we will provide you with a place to stay (though you may be placed with another staffer).

Prizes

There will be many various awards and prizes of token value for highly ranked teams and individuals, including trophies, medals, book prizes, and more. The winning team will receive the coveted traveling trophy and have their names engraved on it for all time.

Statistics

Statistics will be updated live during the tournament and during each game. Full and complete team and individual statistics will be posted at the close of each round and at the end of the tournament. We will be offering full category stats within a week of the event.

Dress Code

There will be a dress code for all staffers and players at the event to coincide with the formality of the tournament. The Tournament Directors and the backend staff will be wearing suit and tie. All staffers should wear business casual dress. Players are encouraged to dress in business casual attire as well, but this is not mandatory; players should dress nicely, however. Articles of clothing such as graphic tees, tank tops, dirty jeans, worn cargo shorts, sweatpants, and the like are not acceptable.

The exception to this is team uniforms; if your team has a uniform that does not otherwise meet the dress code, that is acceptable.

If the weather is particularly hot (generally over 80 degrees) on the day of the competition, the dress code may be relaxed for staffers and players.

Food

No food will be provided for players; breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided for staffers. If you are a staffer, please inform us if you have any food allergies.

Teams should eat breakfast prior to arrival. Lunch will last one hour. If there is a dinner break on either day, it will last an hour and a half.
