About Us
Welcome to the official website of the Long Island Quiz Bowl Alliance!
We are the largest Quizbowl company in the Northeastern United States and second-largest in the country, and we organize local and national tournaments, write questions, and create software for teams all over the country. Here at the LIQBA, we strive to prioritize the enjoyment and experience of participants, regardless of whether you’re playing, spectating, or chaperoning.
Founded in 2019 as a response to the folding of the last Quizbowl tournament in Suffolk County, New York, we created the Island Cup to recognize Long Island’s best Quizbowl teams. Each leg of the Island Cup corresponds to tournaments once held in Suffolk County: October for The Smithtown West Invitational Season Starter, February for The Kings Park Academic Quiz Tournament, and May for The Half Hollow Hills West Tournament.
After our first two tournaments, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, shutting down in-person Quizbowl. The LIQBA thus took the unprecedented step of moving tournaments online to Discord, which proved extremely popular and established us as one of the largest organizations in Quizbowl. We soon temporarily reorganized into the American Quizbowl League, running monthly online tournaments in the 2020-21 season, seeing Quizbowl through the pandemic.
The LIQBA returned in May 2021, and led the return to in-person play that October. We began expanding across the Tri-State and Northeastern U.S, and in 2022 we began to operate all across the country as both a tournament organizer and question provider. We have organized in-person tournaments in Michigan, Louisiana, California, and beyond, and have provided both practice and competition questions to organizers across the country and all over the world.
In 2024, the Long Island Quiz Bowl Alliance announced its acquisitions of Questions Unlimited and Avery Enterprises, which helped to solidify our status as a national Quizbowl organization. This also allowed us to launch the much applauded 30-20-10 format, an online, asynchronous mode of pyramidal competition that has proved insanely popular since its launch in the 2024-25 season.
In 2026, we launched the first rendition of the Quiz Bowl National Championships, running preliminary sites in Colorado, New Jersey, Indiana, and Alabama, with the finals on June 15th, 2026 being a success. We also introduced the innovative concept of multimedia questions in the tournament, enabling us to test our players in ways beyond the written word.
Here at the LIQBA, we strive to be the premier provider of questions and organizer of tournaments at the Elementary, Middle, and High school levels. Please stay tuned for more developments from us. You can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook!
Our President
Joseph Feldman, or just “Joe”, is an accomplished tournament director, having directed more than fifty well-regarded events both in-person and online. These include local tournaments with four teams, State Championships with 72 teams, National Championships with over 100 teams, Online Tournaments with 120 teams, 30-20-10 sessions with 500 or more teams, and everything in between.
Prior to establishing the LIQBA, he played Quizbowl at Smithtown High School West from 2012 to 2016, leading the team for four years. Later on, he also played for Suffolk County Community College in 2021 and 2022, making his way to a fourth-place national finish as a solo team at the Community College Championship Tournament. Joe’s hobbies include building computers, woodworking, taking long drives, fixing his home, refurbishing machinery, playing with his Corgi, and singing, as he is a trained Operatic Bass. Coming from a decidedly blue-collar background, if there’s a trade, or if something needs to be fixed, he can probably do it, and he still works in the trades occasionally for fun as an as-needed electrician, landscaper, or handyman. He likes shorts, as they are comfy and easy to wear, makes far too many jokes about cheese, is often seen driving to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania early in the morning just to go to Waffle House (where they know him by name), and retains an endless longing to buy a 500-acre plot in the Pennsylvania Wilds near Emporium.
He lives in Smithtown on Long Island.
