Tournament Questions

The Long Island Quiz Bowl Alliance proudly provides questions to tournaments, leagues, Quizbowl TV shows, and other events throughout the United States. Our questions are of the finest quality, with extremely rigorous editorial standards, and can be customized to any format you would like. We have provided questions for leagues with all kinds of formats, from 20/20 to 4-quarter to packets of 100 tossups and 50 bonuses, to anything and everything in between. We provide for both in-person, online, and asynchronous competitions. In essence, if you want questions, we’ve got ’em.

STANDARD AND CUSTOM FORMATS

We will write in any format. You do not need to do anything: we will make all the packets for you. We offer standard sets in the 4-quarter format, but all jobs will be accomodated. No additional charge is made for packetization.

PRISTINE QUESTIONS

If you place an order, all the questions we send you are guaranteed to have never been heard in your area. We also guarantee our questions to be free of error, and if one is found, we will fix it immediately at no charge.

GRADE LEVELS

We write questions for both Elementary, Middle/Junior High, and (Senior) High School levels. Please note that some types of questions may only be available at the Senior High level.

TYPES OF QUESTIONS WE WRITE

We write the following types of tossups, but please note that we are happy to do custom questions:

  1. Short tossups: These are no more than 2 lines, but with no less than 3 pyramidal clues. We offer both easier and harder short tossups.
  2. Long tossups: These are pyramidal tossups, no more than about 3-4 lines, at moderate difficulty.
  3. Bonuses: These are multi-part questions on a single topic. They can be two, three, or four parts, depending on your liking. All bonuses start out easy and get harder as they go along; there are distinct easy, medium, and hard parts. If you need one-part bonuses, we use Short Tossups for that!
  4. Lightning rounds: These are sets of 10 very short, related questions on a single topic that are meant to be answered in a short period of time, typically 60 seconds. Our lightning rounds are set apart by having a minimum of two to three clues for each part, and having a consistent, clean difficulty gradient from easiest to hardest.
  5. Alphabet rounds: These are sets of 20 short questions, but all answers start with the same letter. Much like our lightning rounds, minimum numbers of clues and a difficulty gradient still apply; in addition, the distribution of topics is constant for every alphabet round, so you’ll always hear the same amount of History, Literature, and Science, for instance, among other things.
  6. Multiple-Choice Questions: We write multiple choice questions of varying difficulties: some very easy, some very difficult, in all subjects. Please note that, should you order multiple-choice questions from us, nobody who hears them in a game can take any of our Subject Tests, as they use the same questions.

WHERE OUR QUESTIONS CAN BE USED

In short, anywhere! You can use our questions for any tournament, league, Quizbowl TV show, summer camp, or anything else. Please note, though, that we aren’t offering questions for practice at the moment; we intend to do so in the 2025-26 season.

SUBJECTS WE COVER

We write questions in History, Literature, Science, Fine Arts, Religion, Mythology, Philosophy, Social Sciences, Geography, Current Events, Pop Culture, Sports, Trades, and General Knowledge. Basically, we write about everything under the sun!

WHAT REGULATIONS DO YOU NEED TO FOLLOW?

Not much! We try very hard to make it easy for you.

We require you to tell us who played at your event. This is so teams do not hear the same questions at another event: not fun for anyone!

We require you to tell us, accurately, the date of your event.

You are not permitted to send electronic copies of the questions we give you to anyone, ever.

If you’re in the Northeast United States, defined as from Delaware and Pennsylvania to Maine, you are required to tell us the top 4 teams at your tournament so we can invite them to the Northeast Regional Championships.

And that’s it! There are no contracts (unless you would like one) and no agreements to sign. We keep things nice and simple, so you can breathe easy. We do not have standard rules for tournament play; you are free to use your own.

You can also edit, reorder, add to, and make any modification to our questions that you’d like.

PRODUCTION DEADLINES

Please note that there are some jobs that are too large to accomodate. Generally, this is if you order more than 2,000 tossups or if all the questions we’ve written this year have been used in your area already. Even if this applies to you, we may still be able to assist you; it never hurts to ask!

PRICING

Every job we do is custom-quoted, as no two are exactly alike. Give us a email or call and we’d be happy to discuss! Our prices tend to be extremely competitive.

The one exception to this is the standard 4-quarter packets of 14 quarter 1 tossups, 9 quarter 2 tossups with 5 4-part bonuses, 4 lightning rounds, and 18 quarter 4 tossups; these are a standard rate of $50 per packet.

HOW TO SEE A SAMPLE, GET A QUOTE, OR PLACE AN ORDER

To see a sample, get a quote, or place an order, send us an email. We’d love to hear from you! You can reach out to liqballiance@gmail.com or Joe@liqba.com.
For better service, have ready:

  1. Your name, your school or organization name, and the state you’re in
  2. If you’re an existing event, have one game’s worth of questions from the previous season ready to send to us; this is the fastest way for us to learn your format. If you’re a new event, we’ll help you design a format, or you can use a standard one.
  3. How many packets of questions you’ll need for your event
  4. What date you’ll need the first questions by
  5. If you’d like a standard sample, that showcases all our question types, or a custom sample in your format

THANK YOU

Thank you for considering us to be your question provider! We very much hope to work with you this season, and many more beyond that.
